So simple (in the best meaning of the word) but, thanks to your composition, selective focus, contrast between the cool blueish tones and the warm reddish, associations with life and death, the frailty of life jumps to mind. Very evocative indeed. Toast to you Bobby!

i like the diagonal placement of the quill... it would perhaps have stood out better against a less textured backdrop

Bobby, this is a beautiful treatment for a very simple subject. It is both artistic and leaves the viewer with a "tactile" sense of the subject and background.
