Tm, you nailed this. I have spent entire days shooting these guys with my 40D and 100-400mm L f/4, trying to get a shot like this. Just trying to get within 100 yards of them is a challenge at the lake near me.  That 1D MKiii and 500mm L and obviously your skill captured a stunning image. Congrats. Very impressive.

I'm with Mark. Was out yesterday trying to catch one and in flight but too far away seems to be the shots I keep getting.

Thank you folks! I got these good shot because he/she was chasing one another and at that point they don't care how close they are to human. Also, if you ever been to Southern California then make sure to visit El Dorado Park in Longbeach where some of these birds are somewhat very used to people (I think) and one can get pretty close to them.  Happy .. birdshooting! :-)
