The little boy was actually having a great time feeding the seagulls but

when running back torward his family I just happened to captured his

dramatic expression as he was surrounded by seagull shadows.

I love the combination of the running little boy, the birds and the shadows of the birds. You really get the sense of the flying gulls without actually needing to see them. The action and expression of the child is terrific. Well done, Deb!

That is exactly what I was thinking as I viewed this through the viewfinder and then when his expression changed and he had a look of terror, I captured the image. He really was not afraid at all, it's just this expression suddenly emerged as he was running toward his mother who had called him to come back to her. I love to keep looking through the viewfinder as my finger patiently sits on the shutter release just waiting, waiting, waiting for something special. This little boy gave me just that!

Thanks for your words!

Thanks Mark. I felt the same way about the shadows creating the sense of flight without even seeing the actual birds at all. This was a fun shot and I'm so glad I happened upon this family as they were feeding the gulls with their small son... When I saw the shadows, I hoped he would somehow get into the frame and he came running into them when his mother called him to come back toward her. Lucky for me, it all came together just as I had hoped.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you so much for commenting on this image. Yes, his look of fear really made the capture come together.

An interesting composition and presentation!!

The shadows of the birds, the child's expression adds dynamism to the capture.

Great work.
