gordonjb 10,860 Posted December 20, 2010 Hi Pnina , you already know my thoughts on this one ... when photographers refer to the 'decisive moment' this is what they have in mind. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted December 20, 2010 You offer some difficult twists on male-female relationships. Since the "difference" has been the subject of plays, poems, songs, and so forth for centuries, it seems a fitting subject. The acid green horizon and the somewhat ghostly pallor of the skin tones edges this into more fantasy. But then those boxing gloves.... Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted December 21, 2010 Gord, thanks for the decisive moment,I think we all look for it ( between other components), especially in a moving subjects. Coming from you ,shooting a lot while you are moving is a compliment !...;-))Jeff, Yes you are right ! It has a poetic side ,but an unpleasant reality as well. Each of us has seen and/or experienced many sides of differences in human life, including the choreographer and her viewers. That's why she called it " A private collection".It is a single scene of this part , but it is a longer one in the creative dance ,which has different " faces" . j_m_lee_photography 0 Posted December 23, 2010 Hi Pnina, I really like this picture in many way.The way he hold the hair and the glove that say spin. I am glad the right leg of the female dancer leaving the original skin tone and the red color gloves added a balance to the composition. Really good and inspiring piece of art. Shalom :) Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted December 24, 2010 She's amazing. Sickly green is apt. Difficult subject. Jumps out at the viewer aggressively. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted December 24, 2010 Dear Spencer, Thanks for your visit and comment, I'm glad to see you active again, and I hope all is well with you.The choreographer has chosen this one and prepared fliers and a big poster for the series of this dance. Donna, the green is the color on the stage and fits the subject, Shani is a very skilled dancer. This part of the dance speaks of violence against women. Thanks Bob. And to all of you my best seasonal wishes! Link to comment
rivera r 0 Posted December 26, 2010 Well done, Pnina, hope she punched him back.Happy holidays, dear friend. Hugs, Mari Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted December 28, 2010 I don't know what I can add to the above comments. That's what you get when you come late to the party. Apart from the above, what strikes me is the air of authenticity about the situation. The man's demeanor is stereotypical right down to the 'wife beater' undershirt. He's a very good actor as well as dancer, his expression & body language are believable. The green colouring, usually a no-no for people photos because it renders skin tones deathly, is most appropriate here. You have indeed captured the 'decisive moment', an instant of instability. D. Rivera really gets caught up in the moment with the comment " I hope she punched him back" . How much more validation do you need? :-) Best, LM. Link to comment

pnital 36 Posted December 31, 2010 Mary, thanks yes she punched him back ....;-;))Happy new year to you too and hugs. Len, to this party you are never late and always welcomed!;-)) It is a part of the dance that really "dance /talks" about violence against women, and yes ,she is fighting back....;-)) It is a very nice choreography that speaks as well about nice relation. The light is green in this part but not in other parts of the dance. Thanks for writing your impressions in details. Alberto and Tolo thanks as well. And to all of you a creative, fruitful coming new year, and peace. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted January 2, 2011 I hope she turned around and landed a left cross (that's a punch, you know).I see you've been taking some time off during the holidays as well. Well, the new year has dawned and I guess it's time to get back to work. I hope to be posting some new pictures soon and look forward to your new visions. All the best for 2011, Regards, Jack Link to comment
Christal1664882414 0 Posted January 2, 2011 I agree with all that's been said, but I wanted to add my sentiment. VERY powerful image, Pnina! Caught at the perfect moment! Is this a 'special' dance troupe that does social commentary work? I ask because I haven't seen any choreography dealing with such controversial social issues before. Link to comment
3m 0 Posted January 2, 2011 Captured at the absolute right moment, Yes..! I like the dancers' passionate and intense expressions in 'the heat of the moment'. Although this particular scene appears rather aggressive (as this part of the dance seems to be about violence against women), I really admire the flowing movement of the two dancers on stage, and the way you managed to compose that in your photo, Pnina..! (& a great poster for this dance ) Marjolein Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted January 2, 2011 Jack, glad to see you back. Yes she punched back....;-)). I needed some time off,(like you...) but waiting to see your new photos and hope for a fruitful , peaceful new year.Christal, it is a dancing group which is called Dance Drama Company .The choreographer is Sally Anne Friedland. All her works ( and I have photographed about 6-7 works of hers) are very unusual and special, and are hinting through movements/scenes and titles of life experiences ( Imo, and the way I understand the dance) . I like composing moments and photographing her works.Marjolein, it is a hard scene but you are right that it is a flowing movement . I like dances that are saying something through the movement , and here especially, as violence against women is a sad part of human society. I was glad she has chosen this scene for the poster. amalsircar 2 Posted January 6, 2011 Pnina, My first reaction is "Oh, NO! This is not the way to deal with any lady". Then I read your and others comments. This image depicts the darker side of male chauvinism, perhaps to shock the viewers. Link to comment
adan1 0 Posted January 10, 2011 Art is not only about beauty but also the depiction of reality. I find it very intriguing that the man is pulling the woman by her hair. For a woman, hair carries a very powerful symbolism of her femeninity. Paul wrote on I Corinthians 11:14-15 "the shame of one sex is the glory of the opposite sex". It's a difficult composition to look at for some of us but I appreciate your posting of it as a reminder of a reality that some are not aware of. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted January 11, 2011 For me, it's the choreographer and the dancers who are responsible for the male-female relationship stuff. What Pnina did so well is to not step on the message or the feeling and to time her photograph in such a way as to maximize the effect of the dance. This is a collaboration in the best sense of the word, where Pnina lets the dance speak and adds photographic, not narrative, dimension. So the subtle yet present capture of motion, the man's foot rising just above the floor, blurring ethereally, the perspective which allows the syncopation of the two bodies to become a key visual, all are Pnina's contribution. Pnina transmitted, she did not state or create, the male-female dynamic. But she did her job as photographer. She supported the dance and added a uniquely photographic view of it. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted January 16, 2011 Thanks and sorry for my late answer, I did not have my computer for more than a week, and only today I have recieved a new one with window 7....Grigoriy, thanks for all your feedback.Amal,You are right, it is part of life but not the joyful one...it is a conten tfrom life and a reminder.Adan, your citation is very interesting, I think that it adds a lot to the thread. How was your trip?Fred, your assessement is very accurate ! As I see it, it is a collaboration, and I'm the photographer. I'm looking for what is touching me and/or is interesting in the dance for me as a human being (AND as the photohgrapher). I see myself as part of the group, composing the main seconds/movement of narrative at the right moment. Thanks for your wide interpretation. Link to comment
