Funny thing is, this was not what I thought I would shoot when I set out. I trekked about a mile across the desert from the road (the dunes furthest from the road are not spoiled with footprints) and I took some nice shots. As I was returning, I looked back to see if the light was changed and saw the paraglider descending. I didn't have much time to get the shot. The figure does give it some idea of scale, although he is already more than 2/3rds of the way down!  Cheers, RickDB

I really love shot from this erea, they're so unique and colorful!

Love the little detail of the paraglider, makes the contrast between the greatness even bigger :)

Thanks all for your kind comments. The dune colors in Sossusvlei are spectacular, especially during the "golden hours" when the shadows and subtle tones change quickly. To give you some idea of how it all fits together I have added some other pics, one of the whole dune from a distance, a wide-angle close up and another of the paraglider over the S-curve (not quite as good) - just click on the right arrow beside the picture above to see them. Spectacular dunes - I was marveling at these orange and maroon tones in your other photos some time back.  This is a great shot for the added contrast and incredulity of the scene (where did the glider launch from- you wonder) and the effect on scale (look how small that tree looks!). Great work!

Thanks for your kind comments - the dunes at Sossusvlei are quite spectacular but it is sometimes difficult to appreciate the scale without some sort of reference. I suspect the paraglider launched from half way up - there was a strong wind and I expect he might have hoped to be carried higher by the up draught - as is was he came down fairly quickly. Cheers, RickDB.

An excellent shot! It might appear all of a sudden, but it's obvious that you were prepared to freeze the moment. Congratulations.

I'm stingy with sevens, but I'm going to rate this one accordingly! Such a fantastic shot I don't know where to begin!
