Niki,

You seem to have many friends that have critiqued your photograph. That is very nice. I hope you won't take offense if I offer a few comments that I think could improve this photograph.

Raffaella's skin tone looks very nice, but her left forearm and hand, the shoe on her left foot and her bottom are brighter than her face. This draws the viewer's attention away from her face. In a portrait you usually want to direct attention to your subject's face.

The highlights on her left shoe appear clipped. They are so bright that they have lost detail. You have also lost most of the detail in the dark areas. You may have done this on purpose. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Dark areas going to black can help create a nice mood. That usually wouldn't be true of clipped areas.

You have her left leg is quite a unnatural position. It is up so high that it appears the heal of her shoe is going into her head. It looks very awkward. Because her shoe and foot are so large and in such a prominent position within the photograph, they can't be thought of as part of the background. They should not be out of focus. Being out of focus draws attention to them. Actually, they just can't be positioned so close to her head. It looks awkward and just plain silly.

To me, it looks strange for her to be in a nice looking dress with her bare bottom showing. I suppose it could be a nightgown that is just pulled up for some reason? I don't know why she would be in heals while wearing a nightgown, but it is possible.

You have cropped too closely to her left hand -- into her shoe, her head, her bottom ... you have just cropped into her too much. It is not a natural looking crop for Raffaella. She is squished into the frame.

You have her looking at her hand or something in her hand. If she is going to have something in her hand important enough that she is going to be looking at it, the viewer should also see it.

Her eyes are in shadow, as is much of her face. It has set up a somber mood for me. Her expression is one of sadness, despair or gloom. Perhaps she is just thinking about something, but she sure doesn't look very happy.

She does have some imperfections on her face that you will want to soften or remove.

Nice shot,

Mark

Very effective portrait shot, indeed! I like the dark mood and atmosphere you created around her by b/w conversion and rich shadows. Nice work. Bravo.

Hamid.

The imperfection on her face that someone has referred to adds to the layer of sensuality. I'd like to have seen even more detail on the face as your framing is so clever in cutting out bits that one has to focus on her face. I really think that this is a very good composition.
