Brilliant shot, full of emotion and symbolism.  Great tonal range, and excellent composition with the crisscrossing diagonal lines locking the subject in perfect focus.  I like the repeating umbrella shapes placed in perfect diagonal in the frame.  Brilliant really.  Regards - michel

hi Randy,, i agree with Michael.about compositon.. also . there is a softness surrounding the child and yet she is very plain in sight. there is also a sense of tranquility here,,, the motion of the water and the profile of the woman in the boat interesting d.o.f. as well.. samme

A very nice composition and great timing. Just an opinion: Maybe the amount of light diference between the girl´s face and the rest of the composition is too notorious, and that makes the image a bit disconcerting. Best regards!

Great capture in all its aspects, the B&W is terrific. This picture has a huge artistic quality. I love the contact eyes of the little girl and sharpness centered in her. Is cute the pinhole effect and the DOF. Honestly this is a beautiful work which is full of details and depth.
Congrats. 7

Great moment in a life and in time- well captured, titled and lit.  I really like the light on the child and the shadows elsewhere, the contrasts of traditional hats and training jacket, for example, on the woman in the foreground. It's full of emotion and drama while also being just a snap of daily life.  Well done!

Either the child was composited into the image or your blatant and selective treatment of the child by over-sharpening, brightening and increasing contrast make it look to be so. The end result, for myself,  is that you have taken an otherwise superb capture full of  life , possessed of strong lines and composition and turned it into a caricature, robbed of any sense of  honesty or authenticity. A classic example of a situation where less would have been more.

I just love this picture, even after reading Gordon's comment. I looked at the larger version and cannot truly tell if the child was shopped in or not. That said, I think that even if it was shopped, I find that I can live with the result.

Excellent use of diagonals, depth of field and tonal range all emphasizing the subject with its brilliant title.  Deserves much higher ratings.  Doesn't get much better than this.  Congratulations.

Randy,

I very much appreciate your fine eye for composition and the ability you have for capturing your fellow citizens (I presume) of Indonesia. The comments of Annuar and Gordon are I think not misplaced, and I think you you would do well to create both understated (largely unprocessed ) and process images of your photographs. With time, you might find the more understated ones as possessing more attraction. While the more exaggerated treatment has some charm, the more understated treatment (here, the look of the child is enough to carry the image, without the accentuation that tends to make it carricatural rather than poignant). Thank you for showing this beautiful people in many of your images.
