Last night I came back from work and since I wasn't sleepy I decides to get a bowl of cereals and take some pictures while the family was sleeping.

The set up was quite simple, although I used 2 lights, one would have done it just as well. The effect of the snoot on the background which was the second light was barely noticeable. I think I should have adjusted it 1/2 stop brighter.

The camera(Canon 7D) was set at ISO 100, speed at 250th and the F stop was 10. The lens was a Canon EF-S 10-22 mm set to manual focus as 13mm. The main light (Canon 580EXII on a 2'x2' Lastolite EZ Box) was at 45deg camera right set at 45deg. The second light (Canon 580EX) was next to the main light pointing to the background. I locked the zoom to 105mm and attached a Pringle homemade snoot to it.

Since I wanted some fill light, instead of setting a third light I put a large white reflector next to me (camera left) After a few shots I felt I needed additional fill light for the face (mainly under the eyes) so I added a 36" round reflector using the white side to bounce some light back into the shadows.

The flashes were triggered with a Pocket Wizard Mini and 2 Pocket Wizard flex TT5. To control the intesity of them I also used a Pocket Wizard AC3 zone controller that was set to manual mode; that allowed me to set the main light on zone A and the background light on zone B and control both of them from the camera instead of having to go to the light stands (in this case it would not have been a problem since the lights were pretty close to the tripod) The rest is history, set the self timer on the camera to 2 sec delay and trigger with a Canon RC-1 remote control.

I hope this assist someone with setting up some simple lighting while eating a good bowl of cereals,

Regards,

Alex

Excellent work and really a very simple image of something many of us do daily  ;). Lucky us that you were not sleepy and decided to undertake this project. You managed to work the lighting extremely well and I am impressed how nice this turned out with the use of a wide angle lens...the angle and slight distortion adds a multi-dimensional depth to the photo.

I appreciate that you gave us all the technical details, it is very helpful. I am always inspired by your self portrait work and truly impressed with how professional your results are. I am going to give this a try myself and already have much of the equipment to make it happen ;)  Hopefully I will achieve a decent result...you have set the bar pretty high!

Warmest regards, Pamela

Wonderful shot Alex and thank you for explaining how you set up the shot.  I do not have much in lighting equipment, but one day hope to.  Very well done, and I'm so glad you choose 'YOUR  MILK'.........or you may have been 'interrupted' many times during your 'shoot'!! (just kidding)...Great shot for a commercial !  Warm regards, Gail
