Very nice picture showing incipient action.  Good use of depth of field.

 Since you are addressing a non-biological audience at Photo.net I suggest you use the common name.  People react better to Lessor Sandpiper than the Latin name.  With birds this is especially true because there is an international system of assigning common names, so there is never any doubt which bird you mean.
