Great shot Emmanuel, i like the way you handled the specular light on this portrait. I assume you used natural light from a window for this.  Nice expressions, there is an almost daring look on the face of the bigger brother, as in "don't mess with my brother or you'll mess with me" attitude. Very nicely captured.  My only comment is the back of the chair showing behind the bigger brother.  I would have been tempted to keep it out of the image or to clone it out in post-processing. But it's not a major point.  Well done.  Regards - michel

This image is a bit bittersweet. These are two brothers touched by tragedy, but who have managed to survive and thrive, despite it all. Their father, Emeka, was the brother of an old law partner of mine, who was diagnosed with lieukemia in 2006. After treatment, that included chemo, he appeared to have beaten the illness, but relapsed in 2007, and he had to be rushed back to the hospital.

Even though the family prayed and hoped for a miracle, he passed away on November 17, 2007. I remember this date vividly because that was the day of my church wedding to my wife, so that midway through the festivities, the mood of the whole event altered considerably, for Emeka was well known and loved in the community.

The children were three and five years old, and we all worried how they were going to cope. Three years later, they have managed to not only survive, but thrive, and this picture was taken on Lota's birthday at our house.

Thanks Emmanuel for the information on the circumstances of this touching photo of two brothers. Even without knowing their tragic history, anyone seeing the eyes of these two and the protecting arm of the bigger brother, would be touched by this very good portrait.

I agree however, that certain elements could have been improved. The chair over the left shoulder of the bigger brother is indeed not a plus and could be removed. However I would especially lighten slightly the right sides of each of the boys and I would centre their faces more in the frame. The black frame around is reinforcing the de-central position of the two and creates in my eyes an anesthetic bias to the left. Hope this is useful.

This is a beautiful portrait and the lighting is very well handled. But there is also something deeper here, an obvious affection between the two brothers, one might say almost a tenderness, that the camera has caught. I realize that photos should stand alone without explanation but your story adds greater emotional depth and poignancy to this picture.

Emmamiel, I like how the brother in the back is so comfortably draped over his brother in the front. He seems to be protective of him. The boy in front seems to have a sweet innocence in his eyes and in his expression, the boy behind seems a little in your face, maybe it's the pout. They are both beautiful, with gorgeous warm skin tones and deep commanding eyes. Very nice, I like this one.

Beautiful portrait! These boys seem so much older than 6 and 8. There appears to be a protectiveness on the part of the older brother. I am glad to hear they are thriving in spite of the loss of their father.

The strength, determination and close bond of these brothers is clearly evident in this portrait.  That, along with the technical quality, make this a superb photograph!

This image is driven by the colors and the use of light causing definitely an emotional reaction in the viewer - independent of the explanatory lines.Much more than a portrait...

A fabulous portrait - when I need lessons I am coming to see you. There is a glow in the skin tones which I find particularly attractive. Congrats.

PS remove the '4's and the '3' and this would have been a '6' average which seems to be a pretty good score these days..

Emma, this is my kind of image, intimate and full of life!!! I love the arm over his brother, saying I am the strong one do not mess with my brother.  They say that Fidel Castro was like that with his soft brother Raul.  Always protecting him!!!   Warm regards my friend.

I actually like how the chair encircles them, giving a sense of containment and protection.  The warm tones of their skin and those deep blues make for a rich capture.  Thanks for adding the story.  Although the picture could certainly stand alone with ample emotional impact, the context for the picture and their connection is moving.
