The excessive grain and his face hidden in shadow works well for this image. I can see this working nicely as an editorial shot. I wouldn't really consider this a portrait (other than it is a picture of a person).

The location and lighting works well for the depression angle. I would crop some off the right side, so that you have better left and right compositional balance. Just putting the tip of the nose in the vertical center of the photograph will take care of it. Maybe a case could be made for the large area of darkness in front of him adding to the feeling of depression, but he is in such a brightly lit area, I think that would really be reaching for it.
