An abandoned (about 50 years ago) elevated railway on Manhattan's

lower west side has been converted into a garden walkway that extends

10 blocks in the 20's. The city creep up closely to the gardens but they

remain tranquil, 25 feet above street level bustle. Curious as to whether

the image conveys any of this. Thanks for comments.

The subject is interesting, with lice lines, strong light, good colours. Nice urban scene. But the reason for the treatment is not clear to me: the open grey foreground area, the people in the middle groundb eing quite small and insignificant, partly obsured by the grass, the railing almost but not quite parrallel to the frame. I am puzzled. Is this a direction -say- Eggleston, or is this just a photo that would tremendously improve by cropping the bottom third?

Thanks, Arjen. I think the crop you suggest is in order and I will give it a try. However, I'm beginning to doubt that even that will help much. In its couple of years of existence, High Line Park has become a globally acclaimed landmark in urban landscaping. Yet, none of the photos I took during my August visit have managed to convey the essence of the place. I thing that the answer may lie in getting up above it in one of the surrounding buildings and showing the elevated park in relation to the streets beneath it and in a more panoramic composition. At least, you have got me thinking about some fresh approaches. I appreciate that. GJ

I admire your effort and self assesment in trying to capture the essence of this place. This is a world renowned urban park effort and I applaud your efforts. This image could be a strong part of that story, if the story is told in multiple images, standing alone, it does not tell the story. I think you are correct in the need to find a new angle that shows the street, the elevated walkway and finally the gritty urban surroundings. I hope you continue the project. Regarding people in the image, if you can shoot with some people in the foreground, particularly if they are walking away from the camera in an anonymous city way I think you will achieve some very strong images.
