Larry_G1664882113 15 Posted October 17, 2010 Alan, you have a nicely composed image here. The clounds in the sky do a lot to pull the eye into the image. Do you like the image with the blue cast removed, using curves? Also, straightened the horizon line. You may not like the changes. Link to comment
enricoargiolas 0 Posted October 17, 2010 This is an impressive view, but I agree with the previous critique. The image is a little tilted and has also too cold tones. Link to comment
AlanKlein 2,898 Posted October 17, 2010 Good comments. I tried my own hand at correcting. Thanks for the input. Alan Link to comment
snigam 0 Posted November 25, 2010 Can I offer another point of view :) I like the blue cast in original picture. The cast gives the sky more rich blue color. Also it makes sea water blue that compliments the sky. The stones in foreground look more attractive in this tone (as compared to yellowish tone). In conventional photography we used filters to set the tone for landscapes. They add to aesthetics of the image.Sandeep Link to comment
roger_reyes 0 Posted November 27, 2010 Larry's tinkering gave the scene a warm tone, improving the contrast on the foreground rocks and the lighthouse itself, Larry did a good job on this.On the other hand, Sandeep's comments is very true, the blue cast has a cooling effect and beautiful in the other half of the beholders, thus dividing the house on this issue. For me...I still love the original. LenMarriott 9 Posted December 12, 2010 This one prompted me to go digging in my archives for a similar shot I took in 1990. It was taken on one of the high saturation Ektachromes of the day I think. And guess what? Even with the aid of a tripod my horizon was tilted also & required a bit of PS work to level it. Must be the lay of the land or something! My sky area was much less interesting than yours so I framed things a little lower than you did. And though the sun seems lower in the sky in yours mine is less neutral, with a warmer colour balance. Not sure where I'm going with this but I do know I'm not saying one version is better than the other, just different. I see you lucked out with a fishing boat to act as an accent, a counterpoint if you wish, to the lighthouse. I would like to go back there & spend a whole day photographing the different lighting conditions from dawn until dusk. Anyway you have a nice result for your troubles. I wouldn't hesitate to hang either one on my wall. Best, LM. Link to comment
AlanKlein 2,898 Posted December 13, 2010 Len: Thanks for your comments and posting. You have a great shot too. A lot of it was luck. My wife and I happened to hit the spot later in the day when the sun and clouds were really doing good things for me. The boat helps. I have another shot, tighter taken with a regular lens instead of the wide angle, where a wave was caught crashing on that big rock to the right of the lighthouse. That was also luck as I was looking at the light waiting to shoot when it faced the camera and then shot. Luck had it that the wave was crashing at the same time. Sometimes things just work for you. nicolaiecostel 0 Posted January 4, 2011 I like the light and the composition. I don't really like the grass in the foreground, but it tink that comes with the territory.Cheers! Link to comment
BelaMolnar 2 Posted January 20, 2011 You have lots of constructive comments here, but I like the original image most. The composition is great and the boat in the distant, just add to the image. The tone is perfect for as sea scape. Cheers; Bela Link to comment
carlwakefield 0 Posted March 1, 2011 Hello Larry, its an excellent shot for me the version you corrected with a little warming and straightening is spot on. I preffer this wide angle to the other version normal lens shot you showed. Great picture The clouds the boats its all there and makes the shot better. Regards Carl Link to comment
robert_amman 0 Posted December 11, 2011 I agree, the original seems best so far. But it might benefit from less color change/correction than was shown as option. I didn't notice the horizon off until that was stated. It might actually help create the effect of the viewer feeling like a small, awed presence, near the precipice of a big, powerful world Link to comment
Elstad 3 Posted May 2, 2012 A most marvelous seascape image... Makes me want to be there it does. -r- Link to comment
cyanatic 0 Posted December 25, 2013 Alan -- I think I am losing my mind. I could have sworn I commented upon this photo (in conjunction with a closer or more cropped version). Perhaps it was in a thread? Regardless, I really appreciate this version. The clouds seem to sweep me toward the center, then settle upon the lighthouse as well as follow the curve from the foreground rocks and back along that rocky little bay into the lighthouse again. I also like the treatment -- or should I say lack of any apparent post process treatment -- just clean, honest, "here it is in its loveliness". Link to comment
