Welcome to the world of off camera lighting! This is a good start. Your composition is good. I'd like to to have seen the face even softer or more sharper, not where you are at present. Models of darker skin pigmentation produce stunning photographs when going soft and at the same time, could produce marvellous candid pictures when you really 'crank up' the dark dynamic range.

Have you tried to use the Rembrandt lighting technique? With a single flash and reflector, that works really well. To my eyes, this effort is very slightly underexposed on the left side of the face.

However, overall, this is a very good effort and I definitely look forward to seeing more of your experiments.
