Hi Christal,

If you're looking for a "photographically correct" type answer where the rules of thirds etc., etc., would apply then my comments will be of no help!

I'm not one of the Professional's, only an amateur who enjoys taking photographs of about anything! But, . . . here's my opinion.

For me, . . . Yes, this crop works. It centers your attention on the rusted Winch on the deck of the boat with all the old lines still attached. It's obvious the "Rose" is lying on her side, or washed up on the beach/shore to the point of being next to the sea wall (for lack of better terminology), against the grassy area in the lower left of the image.

The exposure is good with sharp details and full depth of field.

I would however be curious to have seen what a little more on the bottom and right side of the image would have looked like. Just enough to see the entire bow of the boat, provided that there were no major "distractions" such as a close parked car or anything.

I like the image, but I like photo's of old boats, ships, & watercraft too! I think the composition has alot of originality, and the overall image is interesting!

Regards,

Jim j.

After the previous comment, I am not sure if I have much more to add.

Firstly I am pleased to be able to see some details in the dark area just behind the winch and everything appears to be crystal clear. As was said before, I just get that feeling that I would like to see just a tad more of the area surrounding the boat and as a minimum, a tad more height to get the full curvature at the top right hand corner.

All the best on a fine image.

First of all, thank you guys.....I now know a new word......winch!  I guess I should have known that term, but I didn't.  And I love rusty things and old dilapidated cars and boats too.  I have a few more I want to load when I have the time.  This was indeed deserted up on the shore.  There was a bunch of clutter behind the boat, but I think I may be able to coax more breathing room all around.  I'll get it off the other computer when I get a chance and submit it.  Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Okay, I found the pictures.  I had a couple of others similar to my original above.  Then I had a couple with the surroundings like this one.  As you can see from this (straight from the camera), I wasn't thrilled with the background, and I didn't like that orange thing around it on the bottom either.  So that's why I decided to get low and shoot up, trying to eliminate both.  I'd be curious how you guys might have handled this shot.  It was just such a wonderful old boat....with lots of character.  And it leaves me wondering.."who was Rose?".  :-)

I think your crop is spot on.  The key is eliminating everything in the frame that doesn't matter to the story you are trying to tell.  You've done that.  For me, leaving the little bit of grass on the bottom left is critical, so I'm glad you included that.  Other than that, your frame is filled with poor neglected Rose.  Excellent work.  Kudos!

Nice details and I like the crop, it makes the wreck stand out.  My first though was, I suppose it was only going to be a 3 hour cruise.  But nice find.

I, too, think the crop is perfect.  I think what makes the photo special and out of the ordinary is the crop.  It's tight and makes on stare at the result to figure it all out.  Otherwise, it's just a boat.  This a work of art.

Christal... Several very good opinions have been offered and they all have merit.  For me, you've nailed it.  Everything necessary to present poor ol' Rose in her sad state have been presented and anything superfluous has been cropped out... Excellent ... Mike

Definitely, the composition is perfect and is pleasing to the eye. Nicely done.

When I saw the tight crop I knew you were hiding something. I too use that same technique for many of my shots. For hanging on the wall your crop works great, but I like your full shot too. With a full shot it would be even better to include more of the surroundings. That way it helps to exaggerate the old and the new.

Do you mind saying where this was found? City/harbor will do?

This was back in 2010, and I can't remember exactly where it was. But it was essentially near Forks, Washington. I'll tell you that this image I'm attaching below was at the same beach, so it may provide a better clue as to exactly where this is. This was not a famous beach like Second or Ruby, but a little town beach that you could drive your car to.....sorry I can't remember more exactly.
I always write trip diaries to help me identify my images. But on this particular day we were exploring campgrounds to see where we might like to stay on a future camping trip, so my diary entries for that day focused mainly on that.

Thanks for your comment and visit.....good to hear from you!

Thanks! La Push is the name of the town. I have been there once to photograph in 2007 and I was again in the area just two weeks ago. I'm sure I will visit there again someday.
