I love the bright red against the blue sky.  However, think about the empathy in this photo - the planes are flying more or less horizontally but the frame is vertical - they are fighing each other in pictorial space.  Using a horizontal format would give the planes an apparent place to move.

Jerry makes a valid point about the orientation of the frame but I think the strong points in this one are the mountains at the bottom, for context, and the sky above into which they are heading, admittedly at a leisurely pace  (vertically, at least, judging by the angle of climb).  A pilot once told me one of the most useless things while flying is altitude above you,  not so with the negative space provided here.  Lots of room for text if this were to grace the cover of a flying magazine.  It all depends on the intended end use of the shot.  Best, LM.

Initially it appeared to me that it needed some cropping off the top to draw more attention to the mountains in the background, but then again I totally agree with Len & Jerry, would depend on it's intended use.

The lighting and details are excellent with great contrasting colors! To me, the mountains in the background really make this photo! Well done!

Thanks very much my friends for your comments.

The Red Arrows have just take off.

Actually I do know the rule that Jerry has mentioned, this is probably the only one photo of this set that I deliberately choosen a vertical framing instead of the "classic" horizontal one to give space to fly to. I chose to have an original crop , actually I've not thought about the possible final use of the shot, but Len's idea is something I'll be proud of.

Using the horizontal frame, I'll probably loose the mountain, which give a sort of reference. My learning after this photo session is that is really important and nice  to have a sort of reference against the plane instead of only a great blue sky.

I'll  post an horizontal crop just for reference.

Thanks again. Vince

Attached is the original version of this shot.

As you can see there isn't so much room to play with and moreover I have this "orange ball" that has forced me to change crop.

Looking at the photo of this airshow, this is the only one of the Red Arrows taking off and I really liked the red color to throw this away.

I got the following message: Hi Jerry, I've posted the original crop of the Red Arrows shot you've commented days ago. I really appreciate if you'll give a look and post a comment.  Sincerely, Vincenzo - so I looked again at the original posting and the comments.  One thing that never occurred to me was its use as a magazine cover - if that had been stated I would have thought the original superb.  It is hard to react to a photo whose purpose is hidden, so I just reacted to it as though it were in a portfolio as is. Perhaps as a portfolio image you would like to do something like this upload.  Mine was quick and dirty.  Yours could be done better I am sure.

Regards,

Jerry

Jerry,

your results is good: I haven't thought to clone the sky to hide the "hat". The composition so done is strong and balanced, actually more that my crop.

In any case next time I'll shot more than one photo to try to get one without disturbing object.
