wolfgangarnold 142 Posted September 19, 2010 withered leaves and blossoms are compelling subjects - and this is a great photo, so to me at least, it's hard to suggest any improvements. The only slight issue I noticed is that some of the capillary lines seem to be a bit bright (at least on my notebook monitor) this might be due to a bit too strong unsharp mask (at least I notice this effect on my photos when overdoing this a bit). It's also always worth experimeting with lighting - for these subjects I find one light source and side light is working best to underline fine structures. wood 1 Posted September 19, 2010 Thanks so much for your comments. Looking closely at the web version of this photo I see what you mean about the apparent oversharpening. This is the first time I have noticed a significant difference between the Photoshop version and the web version. I have replaced the first post with another version that I hope will address this issue. The lighting I used was ambient light through two windows at right angles to each other, one stronger than the other. I experimented with one light source but it created too many shadows with this subject. For subjects with much less depth, a single light source works fine. Link to comment
wolfgangarnold 142 Posted September 19, 2010 indeed, this version is better. Now, details and tonality suit wonderfully - and I see your point about lighting this leaf. Link to comment
katenoelartistry 0 Posted September 21, 2010 I really like how the dead leafage seems still so alive. I definitely enjoy the way the light bounces off the "veins" of it. I think maybe doing very subtle low lighting from behind, like from the ground pointing up, would make the bottom really pop. There are some great textures in there. Link to comment
