The purpose of the Bologna Process (or Bologna Accords) is to createthe European Higher Education Area by making academic degree standardsand quality assurance standards more comparable and compatiblethroughout Europe. It is named after the place it was proposed, theUniversity of Bologna in the Italian city of Bologna. It is a commonmisconception that the Bologna Process is an EU initiative. The reformwill also mean the end of a long standing Spanish tradition ofcentralised definition of degrees, both in their names and in a largepart of their contents. Universities will have a very large autonomyto define their programmes and the name of their degrees, and willhave to account for the results by means of an evaluation andaccreditation Process.
