Hanh, very nice light here which gets the best out of those greens. to me the stem in upper corner looks out of place, and puts subject too low in the frame which throws balance off whole image. have done a crop i think works. have worked on a couple of your images in the past with no response. if you prefer i keep my hands off of your images just say so. i realize i am very opinionated when it comes to flowers, and you have every right to tell me to keep my little paws off of your work!

Hanh,

This is a beautiful image, beautifully lit and wonderfully composed.  I would not change a single thing.  I completely disagree with the person who cropped.  In doing so he has destroyed your delicate composition.

Dorothy, just look above and you will see Hanhs original image. i have only put what i think works better here, thats what this site is suppose to be all about. exchanging ideas and sometimes knowledge. i have not destroyed Hanhs delicate composition. i have offered up another way of seeing image, nothing more and nothing less.

Ah - but I think you have destroyed the composition!  The weight and negative balance of the stem in the upper right balances the mass of the flower and leaves below.  By removing that balance you have turned Hanh's photograph into a boring and ordinary, in my opinion, picture of a flower and its leaves that I would have not looked at twice.

The fact that we disagree on this photograph means to me that we are indeed having an open exchange of ideas.

Hanh, first of all, I think that you have created a very fine image. The flower with the leafs is beautiful, and the light also is very good.

Your composition with lots of empty space above is very interesting.  I also really like the arc that is created by the stem above and continued by one of the leafs.

Something I'm not sure about is your decision to fill some of the space with the green. On one hand, it does introduce some balance, but for my taste it is too bright, which means that it attracts too much attention. Perhaps darkening it might help.

Rogers crop does not quite work for me because the cropped leaf looks disturbing and the flower has not enough space in the direction it is 'looking'. But that's all just my 2 ct. ;-)

Alltogether, an interesting an beautiful image!

Dorothy,

the reason has taken me so long to reply, is that i live on the south island of New Zealand, and not only did we have a big earth quake, but we also have had really bad weather and our power has been off more than on since saturday.

my response to your critique was both unnecessary and uncalled for. ( plus also a bit childish ). think perhaps i took exception to the word "destroyed".

i see what your saying about the weight and negative balance of the stem, balancing the flower and leafs below. i see it, but that does not make it work any better for me. this is a nice enough image, but to me has little x factor. actually what i think has little to do with why am here, just wanted to say sorry for sounding such a pratt!

regards, roger
