20 seconds to sunrise

Exactly - well, more or less - the same composition of my previous

post, but 20 minutes later. The sun rose from behind the ridges just a

few moments after the shutter closed.

This is lake Rosset with the Gran Paradiso range in the background.

This is really quite nice.  The red on the hillside and the plants in the foreground are superb, and the composition as a whole is wonderful.  And yes, larger is better!

Thanks all for commenting, it's always great and helpful reading what others think of your work, and I'm just glad that this picture has met the liking of so many of you.

It's been indeed a very special moment, it took me an early wake up at 3am, one and half hour driving and one more hour hiking to get there well before dawn, it only lasted a few seconds but it's one of those memorable, rewarding moments, a good reminder as to why I (we) do what I do. ;-)

Outstanding work, Paolo.  Your effort really paid off.  Also, thanks for posting exposure information.  I like this one most, of the two you posted.  It has greater dynamic range, and the plant in the foreground, which really enhances the photo, shows up better.  It's interesting that the other photo, exposed at 1/5 sec, shows ripples in the water, and that this one, 30 sec exposure, shows flat water.  Of course, a longer exposure tends to flatten the water, but if there were ripples, I would think the reflection of the mountains in this photo would be quite a bit more blurry.  Can you comment on that, please?  Anyway, keep up the good work.  best regards, Erik

Erik, actually it's the contrary. When you expose for such a long time - 30 seconds in this case, but the longer the better - you can highly increase the sharpness of the reflections. The long exposure evens up the ripples, and it turns the water into a smooth, highly refelctive surface.
