This is a technically accomplished image. The details are well preserved and presented and the subtle variation of tones is quite nicely handled. However, I am left with a mixed opinion of the image because I find it very ambiguous. The darkness of the presentation seems to suggest a foreboding mood, yet the place seems quite open and nonthreatening. On the other hand, it doesn't make me want to spend time here or explore this space further. As a result, I feel the photo has little impact on me as a viewer and I don't really desire to spend longer with it.

I agree with Ian's assessment of the mood depicted here; foreboding,  though I'm not sure I'm 100% clear on the meaning of some of his other observations.  I think that the B&W presentation helps re-enforce that mood.  Until I flip the photo horizontally, so the foreground tree is on the left, I find this one's composition  unsettles me.  I think it has to do with living in the western world and being used to reading text from left to right.  I find that I frequently have to use this technique when I post a photo in which I had no control over the subject placement.  My 'Old Man Winter' (tree carving) in my 2008 folder is a case in point.  Bottom line:  I like the textures and range of tones  portrayed here.  Best, LM.

Horizontal flip doesn't work for me.  Composition works well as does its presentation.  The mood to me is more intrigue than forboding or dark.  There are many points of interest to hold my attention.  I think you've found some pleasant order in a forest, not an easy achievment.

Museeb...  Dark and moody as this is, and even though I feel the foreboding atmosphere; I like it because even from the thumbnail it jumped out at me as an intriguing image.  Excellent tones, detail and composition... Mike
