The Beacon

Swiftcurrent Lake reflects Grinnell Point in the rarely calm waters as the first rays of the day strike the peak. I was amazed that the surrounding clouds never lit up with color, as I had hoped. In hind site, I really liked how the mountain was separated from the background as if lit by a spotlight. The light quickly faded and everything began to look grey and dull. A German photrographer and I were the only 2 at the lake, and rejoiced in the unusual lighting together in our respective languages. Somehow, we knew what each other were saying! ISO 100, f16, 3.2 sec exposure, daylight white balanced.

My first thought was that the mountain was over saturated by photoshop.  After reading your text, I recognize it as a truly remarkable shot.  Can't say any more about it.  7 / 7

Very very well done, Harry...

Wow..gorgeous. I've been trying for one like this but never seem to get such beautiful light. I like how you used the rocks in the foreground.

I am congratulating for you with all my heart, perseverances in seeking the beautiful illumination during morning escapades.

Indeed, it is very well presentation well-known to us, yet today you demonstrated them in the exceptional way.

It's great that you shared your observations with us. Whole-heartedly regards from distant Poland. Artur.

Thanks everyone for you remarks.

Jerry - I suspected that many would look at the photo and think more art than photo with the post-processing, but as you say, mnature does provide some magic.  These colors are as natural as I remember them.

Lisa & Fred - I too like the symetry and place the horizon around midline.  I know we are told not a good idea, but for some images I think it works.  Most of the images I took at this lake were composed this way.  Had I not had some interesting rocks in the FG, I may have brought the camera higher and shot the reflection with more sky.  I have some other images tht include different rocks that I find even more compelling, though the lighting is quite different,  that I have yet to upload - soon I hope!

Thanks again, Harry

Gorgeous!   I also use the grad #2 ND , 17-40, and a 5D. Have a 5DMark2 coming  and only hope I can be presented with an opt like this one.  Great job!  I love the foreground and the light balance with sky and water.  Amazing light on the peak.
