This is one of the best pictures I have ever run across. I know that it sounds exaggerated but it is the truth.

Everything captivated me. The theme, the execution, the girl's face...

Thanks for sharing!

Excellent compositon Bob!   The young child seems so 'lost' to me...while the world goes on around her with little attention to this wee one. I'm sure a parent in just beside her, but there is something that has everyone's attention.  Well executed and  presented, congrats, Gail (Sorry tried to rate a 7 but was not allowed.....too soon, but count my 6's as 7's, I know - you know this is a great shot!)

Note: Please excuse the cut-and-paste comment. For the moment I'm using attributed ratings but not offering critiques since some members have stated they would welcome such attributed ratings rather than anonymous ratings, regardless of carefully considered critiques or generic comments such as "Great capture!" or "Well seen!". This is merely an experiment and nothing personal. If you would like a critique please feel free to e-mail me: lexnotlex2 at netscape dot net. I will make a sincere effort to respond to all such inquiries. Regards, Lex.

An excellent and very well observed capture, Bob..! -- Interesting treatment &  very nicely composed, imo.  (& I think that you are the attentive one here :-)  Best regards to you, Marjolein

I really like this unusual choice in composition.  The child does grab your attention and would have in a drab crowd. But punching up her color and leaving the rest monochrome is a brilliant way to accentuate how she stands out, a focused little girl among seemingly lost and absent adults.  The background structure is amazing too - gives the feeling of steel plates.  Very evocative image, makes you wonder what they were all watching. Best regards,

Apparently I'm in the minority here but I believe this photo is strong enough to stand on its own without the selective color.  It seems unnecessary and almost too obvious in trying to manipulate the viewer.  I believe it would work very well in all-monochrome and still preserve the somber sense of isolation and scale.  (Which reminds me, I've got at least one selective color desaturated photo in my own portfolio from a few years ago that now seems gimmicky in retrospect.)

Well, I'm looking at it again - probably the third or fourth time I've viewed this photo - and I still really like it. My quibbles about the selective color are very minor nits to pick. The photo is terrific either way.  It's the sort of photo I'd love to have in my portfolio.
