The Northern Coast of California just north of San Francisco is adorned with succulents such as these ice plants. The red color is as you are seeing it; very rich and saturated. While visiting for a weeklong vacation, we had almost no sunshine with the exception of a few hours during the middle of the day. For a moment, the sun tries to break through, allowing the rich colors to show. Thanks for offering your comments!

Was there a week or so before you.  Had lovely afternoons but the mornings were terrible.  Your picture is wonderful.  S

Outstanding sea scape capture, great light, composition and dof, all of the best.

Thanks Thomas, Steve, Rashed and Mike! The photographic potential in this area is very good, however the potential for unfavorable weather is also likely. Time it right and you will have a treasure trove of good images. Time it poorly and you will have to work hard for only a few. I timed it poorly!

Very nice work.  I was there the week before you as well (little north, Point Arena area).  Has been one of the foggiest/coldest summers on record.  You faired much better than I at the shore.  I mostly moved just a little inland to the forest, to find some light to work with.  I also used the fog as one big soft light-box, for some flower / still life work.   To me, fog or not, the California North Coast is still one of the most beautiful places in the world.  Once more, great work, thank you for sharing.  All the best to you...

Now this is the northern California that I remember:  colorful yet moody, all long sweeping lines and dramatic sea stacks.  I love ice plants, though I never did make an image of them that satisfied me.  You've got one here, where the muted reds give a very pleasing color accent to the muted tones of the water, sand and sky.  Those  yellow flowers on pale green give a lovely foreground:  a classic compositional device that you've rendered beautifully here.

Thanks Dave and John! Sorry for the tardy responses. Dave, so true, this length of coastline is stunning and so accessible. Like you, I travelled inland to try an position myself along the fogline for some warmer light. Further inland and there were no clouds. John, so good to hear from you. I hope all is well with you and you are enjoying your new digs. I bet you miss the "left coast"! Thanks for the kind words!
