I like the 'coming and going' idea here though I think you missed a tad on the optimum placement of your subjects.  In one or two seconds they would have lined up less centrally, one in each corner, for a more pronounced angle on the diagonal.  If desired, this could be assured by taking multiple exposures as the two subjects passed.  A fine image in any case, certainly one for the travel album.  I noticed a slight colour bias here as well that was cured, to my satisfaction at least, with a pass through Auto Levels in Photoshop.  Though my result is more neutral it could be misrepresenting the actual atmospheric conditions that were present at the time of your exposure.  One humble view for your consideration.  Best, LM.

Your are absolutely right in your critique and I appraise your discussion and the deep skilled you have. Yes I agree that the two subjects are not in its optimum placement. And the colors you have suggested is more beautiful and really artistic in comparison to the original. Really I prefer, if it reflect the actual atmosphere or not because Photography some times true and some times not.
