Cheese Market, Alkmaar

The Cheese Market in my home-town Alkmaar is our major tourist attraction. It is held on Friday mornings during the season and a colorful event, full of photo opportunities. The cheese carriers bring the cheeses (120 kg!) to and from an old balance on which they are weighed. There is a fierce competition between the four groups of cheese carriers, that wear different-colored hats, to be the fastest on the one hand, and to carry as few cheeses as possible (especially on hot summer days).
