Not Here 93 Posted August 7, 2010 Andrew... Tighter would work for me, but I'm not that artistic (stuck on traditional). As always, a beautiful young lady and excellent b/w work... Mike Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted August 7, 2010 Andrew,She is a very beautiful girl.If being traditional means you tend to follow compositional "rules" that have been found to work over time, then I am a traditionalist. You don't want her elbow back that far. It gives a very poor (not very feminine looking) line to her arm and causes wrinkles at her armpit. I would like to see her turned a tad more toward the camera so that she is not turned 90 degrees to the camera. This can make the head look somewhat unsupported. Somewhere around 45 degrees looks good. You have two catch lights in her eyes. One catch light per eye is preferred. Her right hand looks quite nice. You have come very close to cropping her left arm at the wrist. You do not want to crop at a joint. That tends to make a subject look like an amputee.Yes, you do want to move in closer. You have a lot of wasted space. Try a vertical format. Your subject should have more room in front of her than behind. This allows her to be facing into the picture, not out of it. You want to compositionally balance the left and right sides of the photograph. The compositional "rule" for this suggests that you position the tip of the subject's nose in the vertical center of the photograph. You might consider cropping a bit at the top. She really has too much headroom. You have focused quite well and her make-up looks very good. I do like her skin tone. The background in nicely neutral and she is well separated from it. The soft lighting looks very nice on her.Nice shot,Mark Link to comment
richard hans 0 Posted August 8, 2010 Very tasteful portrait with " high-key" effect, feel elegant & graceful! Best regards Link to comment
andrzejp 7 Posted August 8, 2010 Mark, I always appreciate your critiques. Most of you points are correct. Unfortunately I am very passionate about my pictures I I post them before having a very critical final look. Link to comment
davidmccracken 2 Posted August 9, 2010 I do love this portrait. I think a tighter crop might help making the cropped hand look less like a mistake. Alternatively a looser crop showing the hand might work too. Link to comment
andrzejp 7 Posted August 9, 2010 David, Thanks a lot for your visit and for your comments. I will look at the picture again from your point of view. Link to comment
Not Here 93 Posted August 9, 2010 Ok Andrew... Here's my composition. Just a thought and not meant to be better; but probably the way I would have presented this shot. Is mine too boring? Not interesting enough? Anyway, you can't go wrong with this young lady :-) ... Mike Link to comment
