alfbailey 2 Posted August 1, 2010 This is a photo taken just as the tide is rushing into the River Mersey estuary. 2 Minutes after this shot was taken the rocks were under water, Colour or B & W ? your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thank You Link to comment
papasan 0 Posted August 1, 2010 The B&W version has more drama in it. The sky becomes more moody, and the dark forms in the foreground even more important. The lighthouse however seems a bit more lost in this image. There is less contrast between it and the sky. I like the B&W version but i think the color version has more nuances in the light. IF i had a choice i think i would go for the color version, but both are excellent. Regards - michel Link to comment
papasan 0 Posted August 1, 2010 Hi again Alf, i took the liberty to play a bit with your B&W version to bring out the lighthouse, and with dodge and burn tools, bring out some highlights and tones in the sky and the foreground a bit. Just a suggestion. Regards - michel Link to comment
ruudalbers 1 Posted August 1, 2010 Really beautiful work with very nice lighting, Alf! Link to comment
johnroberts 0 Posted August 1, 2010 Lots of drama that mono tends to bring to shots like this. Great framing and viewpoint. I have a tendency to go for the colour version.Regards...John Link to comment
alfbailey 2 Posted August 1, 2010 MICHELMany thanks for your valuable imput, I really like your dodge and burn version it brightens the lighthouse and makes it more prominant and gives the foreground rocks a more appealing look also. I very rarely try B & W as none of my images seem to lend themselves to it, but I thought I'd give it a go with this one. Thanks again Michel you have given me some great pointers there.RegardsAlfRUUDSincere thanks for your very kind words, much appreciated!RegardsAlfJOHN It was the "High Drama" kind of look I wanted to achieve with this B & W shot, I don't think I've quite got the hang of it yet though. Many thanks for your feedback mate! much appreciated.RegardsAlfLESTERSincere thanks for your visit and kind words! Much appreciated!RegardsAlf Link to comment
riclan 0 Posted August 1, 2010 I prefer the b&w version. In the color version, I'm distract by the green rock versus the sky. I also like Michel's version (the lighthouse stands out). Link to comment
hstelljes 41 Posted August 1, 2010 If I had to choose I'm leaning to the color version, for all the reasons Michel stated above. This image is still very good with the sky and foreground once again working well. Congrats on both.Sincerely,Holger Link to comment
photo by patsy dunn 1 Posted August 2, 2010 Alf, I like this image also. I think the b/w adds drama to the scene. Great job!! Take care, Patsy Link to comment
scottsmorra 0 Posted August 2, 2010 Nice shot Alf. The B/W processing works very well here and I like the horizon in the middle of the frame. I also like how the clouds and rocks seem to mirror each other. Well done. Link to comment
alfbailey 2 Posted August 3, 2010 RICHARD Many thanks for your visit and feedback, I know what you mean about the green rocks, I like them but they are a bit startling and not to everyones taste. I agree wiith you about Michels version, the dodge and burn really makes a difference.Kind RegardsAlfHOLGER Many thanks for your thoughts and feedback, very much appreciated! I think the colour version is more popular, but I'm still undecided.Cheers Holger!RegardsAlfPATSY Thanks for stopping by Patsy, I agree with you, I do think the B & W version is more dramatic, which is what I was aiming for, but I don't think I've quite got it right........yet.Kind RegardsAlfSCOTT Many thanks for your thoughts and comments. It's strange sometimes a horizon in the centre of an image looks all wrong, but I must confess I didn't really notice that it was in the centre on this shot. Which, I suppose indicates that it works as it isn't drawing attention to it's position for any of the wrong reasons.Cheers ScottRegardsAlf Link to comment
ldavidson 4 Posted August 3, 2010 Alf, both images are amazing. I think I prefer this one. I like the soft greys, strong blacks and the gradations of tones, they help me concentrate more on the composition and the interesting shapes created by the ground and the shining water. Excellent work. Link to comment
alfbailey 2 Posted August 4, 2010 LINDA Many thanks for your visit and very kind comments, you have described everything I like about the B & W version also. Theres something nostalgic about B & W too that accentuates a lot of scenes, I think sometimes that a image devoid of colour somehow triggers our minds to open to a deeper sense of atmosphere. Thanks again Linda.Kind RegardsAlfBOBBY Sincere Thanks for your visit and kind words, much appreciated!Kind RegardsAlf Link to comment
swede621 0 Posted August 5, 2010 I just gave rave reviews on the color version. Then I saw the B/W. Also excellent. I have usually always prefered color over B/W but this image surely lends itself to be portrayed dramatically as you have shown.Excellent again as usual... Link to comment
alfbailey 2 Posted August 6, 2010 JERRYMany thanks for your feedback and generous comments, I'm not sure that I've got the B & W technique quite right yet, but it looks better in Michels dodge and burn version, and so the learning curve continues.Kind RegardsAlfALBERTOSincere Thanks for your visit and kind comments, I hope you are keeping well!Warm RegardsAlf Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted August 11, 2010 Both versions are lovely, but I think I like the B&W version just a bit more. The revision that lightens the lighthouse adds a nice touch as well. A really spectacular capture, regardless of which way it's presented. Link to comment
alfbailey 2 Posted August 12, 2010 JeffSMany thanks foir your visit and kind words I'm really pleased you liked it,B & W is an aspect of photography that I like, but which seems much more difficult to achieve good results than I thought, nothing like a challenge though eh!RegardsAlf Link to comment
