At the Millinery

carsten_ranke

I watched this man strolling and was glad that he made a stop at the millinery. 1/180 sec f:1 ISO 160 with M9 and Noctilux 1.0. Capture One 5.1.2 and CS3, Silver Efex for B+W

I tend to agree with Volker on the message theme.  Could also work with someone carrying a camera & standing in front of a camera store window.  Or....pick another theme & store window.  A fine story telling shot in any case.  The other story I am receiving on this F1.0 series of yours is that there is a time and place for wide open super fast lenses though most of the time the shots would benefit from smaller, sharper f stops.  Even though a higher ISO and possibly slower shutter speeds would be required I feel that the image quality would be improved noticeably.  Nice to have all that speed available but only for the few special occasions when it is absolutely required.  Best, LM.

Len, you are probably right with the f-stop. Wanted to isolate the man (better, his hat), and thought the f1 was the best option. This lens has field curvature, and after focusing and reframing the hat was slightly but noticeably OOF. Anyway, better an unsharp story than a sharp bore ;-)

I like the result, his reflected shadow on the hats window, is like having him as an outsider/insider at the same time.... Bringing /taking wood into/from the forest...Peter's "enlarged" analogy.....;-))

Thank you for dropping by, Pnina :-) I took one step sidewards to get my shadow out of the window, to see only his shadow and the hats... In the viewfinder it looked busy, so the wide open lens was my choice.

Carsten,

i really like this short.

i like the geometry with curving line of hats balancing the large image of a man. the white of his jacket and hat (a difficult exposure i admit) is a bit too hot for my taste. he is already commanding enough attention just by being a human and by taking a large proportion of the frame.

an unplanned find, i presume, but then - the fortune favors prepared lenses ;).

A beautiful composition and a great visual story - you might say "a tip of the hat' to the concept. It is a tad too soft for me for this subject matter- would prefer to have some portion of the gentleman (his hat?) to be a bit sharper. Just a personal preference on a fine image. best regards,

Tony, thanks a lot. Yes I would like to reshoot with f:2, and no ND filter to hold back the light ;-) But I am afraid there is no 2nd chance. Street photography is a tough job, as compared to landscape ...
