Probably one of the most moving moments I experienced in the wild. An

elephant had died most probably of anthrax close to a waterhole. For

more than a week another elephant stayed by its dead companion and did

not let any scavanger and predator come close. It could have not been

more symbolic than for the elephant to reach out with his trunk and

say goodbye before finally leaving.

i am so moved and touched by this image and i have tears in my eyes, to read about the deep mourning emotions of this wonderful creature. there is to see great sadness and tenderness and i have to say, i will never forget this image with all expressions to me.

Wow, very powerful image.  The photograph becomes secondary to the actual event; the hallmark of documentary perfection...  Mike

Powerful image Mark....indeed elephants are well known mourning other individuals that they were connected to. It is another proof of their intelligence and the fact that humans are not the only creatures that have feelings. Well done, Mark, regards, Teo
