Boy, I love it when you take these pictures.  I'm so sad that American kitsch is disappearing into a homogenized hole.  I can envision traveling around in a VW van looking for a place to crash and coming upon this place.

Thanks. Yes, these are falling by the wayside, but there are still plenty of them around for now. But I well remember the days when on a car trip and looking for a place to spend the night offered more than the cookie cutter Super 8's and  Holiday Inn's of today.

I agree with Jeff about the continuing homogenization of America. We are becoming a souless people, afraid to stray too far from the centerline - and the funny thing is we have to rely on the media to draw that centerline for us. This is the disappearing, idiosyncratic America and if you don't produce a book, a record of these monuments to kitsch, you're crazy.

David, This is wonderful! I love American kitsch. I'm getting ready for a road trip myself from Ponchatoula to Flagstaff. Part of my route will be the old 66. I am really getting excited!

Thanks. Ye olde 66 is such a wonderful point in time. I know of nothing that elicits more nostalgia. Have a great time on your trip.

Eccentric and well captured.  There is a book called "Roadside America" by John Margolies from Taschen publications.  It contains 400 pictures of roadside advertising and fantasy structures that are right down your alley.  You should publish a book like that David.
