The photographer has used burning and dodging in a way that reminds the first big photographers like Adams, Stieglietz,.. He has done it in a way that improves contrast and aesthetics.

Sorry, I just think this photo is overdone. The sky color is too extreme and the tonal variations from light to dark in the foreground and especially around the horizon line, are splotchy. Great idea and great composition. Sometimes you have to work harder for it to look like you didn't work so hard!

Overdone ? Yes, the execurion is, I think. BUT... I like the idea, and with some work, this is going to do the job... Right now, we see to many marks on the land and the sky - i.e brush matks. The sky is also a bit over-burned and so is the grass on the left. The way to get this right is:

1) to duplicate your background layer

2) to select the ground carefully, then darken it overall first using curves

3) Same principle applies to the sky

4) add color to sky

5) dulicate the resulting layer and brighten it up

6) Place de darker layer on top of the bright one

7) Use a large eraser brush with hardness 0 at very low opacity (10% or so) and erase partly the areas of the dark layer that you want to get brighter.

There are other ways, but this is safe, easy and gives you smooth transitions all over the frame.

I think you may also want to move the horse down a little, so that his head isn't on the horizon line... Then, I believe you should be able to get a great image out of this. (Keep all your layers, just in case.) Regards.

Wow. The sky is amazing. I like the exposure you chose for this. Why is the ground lit that way? Was it natural or retouched later?
