The Chinese Caribbean

On Hainan Island off of the SW coast of China, there is a massive

development of hotels and theme parks for Chinese who have never

experienced a tropical paradise (although it is a bit of a stretch to

classify Hainan as a paradise). Nonetheless, hundreds of thousands of

Chinese annually trek to the island and the first purchase of most

couples make is matching swimwear with bold designs and colors that

are so uncharacteristic of Chinese from the recent past.

When I visited Sanya, I had to fly into Haiku and be driven south. It was a drive not to be forgotten. And yes! When I got there, I was faced by a mini paradise. (I use that word in a very vague fashion.)

Thanks for the memory. Or maybe that should be... no thanks for the memory. However, thanks for the smile!
