I like your composition in this shot Mark. Was the light really this red? This looks a little over the top to me, but I'm no desert expert either.  Looks very surreal as is.

All the best,
Neil

I give this shot the comment, "interesting". I agree that the colors feel like they are beyond reality, but a bigger concern for me is transposing of the image. I would be most interesting in learning more about this shot.

Thanks Neil and Craig for taking time to view and comment the image. I'll be happy to elaborate. The shot is from 1996 and I try to remember the details as best as I can.

First some technical information: This was shot using a Nikon F4, 20mm, Fuji Velvia 50 film, aperture 22, x seconds exposure, tripod. I use a Nikon Coolscan to digitalize.

Photographic conditions: Winter (~February), image was taken literally just a few seconds before the sun set, it was a weak but warm/red sunset, ice cold temperature, cristal clear conditions.

Transposing: Ooops, that is really my unintentional mistake. I must have scanned the image the wrong side. That should not happen for landscape images, with wildlife I do sometimes reverse on purpose.

Colors: I love colours and tend to go for a fairly saturated look. Having said that, the colors on the original slide laying on my lighttable looks very very close to this digital version. The deep red is the result of :

  • Fuji Velvia 50 film (which tends to saturate colours)
  • slight underexposure
  • long shutter speed
  • foremost due to the very last rays of a red coloured soft sunset.

Hope this has helped to shed some (red) light on to the image.

Mark, well remembered indeed. Velvia film, ah yes the colors it captured. Your portfolio is wonderful and excellent and this flipped image suggested a film original indeed. All the best to you in your endeavors.
