I might try to tinker with the B/W conversion here...you shot this with a "cannon power shot"....did you shoot this in a "B/W mode" or did you shoot it in color, then switch to B/W?  I find converting a color shot after the fact more advantageous, even better from a RAW image...

Somehow, this B/W is just too flat...perhaps lacks contrast...im not exactly sure...later Ill try to tinker with it myself and see if I can make any since of what I see problematic with this shot, but that I am apparently incapable of verbalizing :D

On a positive note, the expression is interesting...and amazingly human in appearance...although that is not a coincidence....take care.
