The Philadelphia Bourse Building, the first commodities exchange inthe United States, was founded in 1891 by George E. Bartol. Completedin 1895, it was the first commodities exchange in the United States. The architects were G. W. & W. D. Hewitt. The building was one of thefirst steel-framed buildings to be constructed. Three types of masonrywere used on the facade: Carlisle redstone, Pompeian buff brick andterra cotta.

The Philadelphia Bourse stopped functioning as a commodities exchangein the 1960s. The structure continued to serve as an office buildinguntil 1979, when it was sold and renovated to include upscale retailspace on floors near the street level. The location was notparticularly successful as a retail destination, and most of the shopsand eating places now operating at the Bourse are tourist-oriented.There is also a movie theater in the building, the Ritz at the Bourse. The upper levels of the building continue to house office space.

Celebrating over 100 years as a center for commerce and trade, TheBourse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
