Your photo is tonally flat - a fill flash would have helped prevent this.  I understand that the bird could have been too far away.  You have good focus on the bird's head, that really helps to draw your attention.  I am curious what happened with the tail though - there are a couple spots that look like you maybe tried to use the healing brush tool??
