Good confidence-building attempt by the Dad.Look at the face of the child! It has become whiter than the snow. Very good composition, exposure and tonality.Congrats preserving these old photographs.

Thanks for the ego trip. Always nice to have someone view and comment positively on my photo offerings. As for this one, though it's not readily apparent, but if you look closely, you'll see that the front half of the toboggan is airborne and the expression on the little girl's face is probably the anticipation of the impact when this almost out of control craft hits the ground again. And look at Dad, he's barely attached to the back end of it. Would have had some sore knees that evening. I have a few more though perhaps less dramatic shots from this location and time period that I may post in the near future. Stay tuned! Best, LM.

I wonder how old nowaday  the child is?.... it is such a good exposure and timing.  You have so well photographed the moment, and both their faces are telling the story without words needed. Seeing the slop and the"wavy" construction of it, I understand the expressions of both, and the sitiuation. The snow texture and the people at the BG show well how active the point is. Great B/W and a great shoebox.....;-))

(btw, thanks for your follow up)!

The little girl would be over 50 years old today as this was taken in 1960. In skiing the waves are called moguls; in tobogganing  they're called "Ow,  Ow,  Ow, Ow".  :-)  Since I still have the negatives, the prints having been lost in the passing years, it's been fun reviving these old shots & seeing for the first time in half a century what I actually was able to capture.  Thanks for your interest.  Best, LM.

very nice composition...just the right set up for a b/w. the expression you capture is truely nice. but what makes the photo is of course the patterns on the ice. compliments -koushik

Your comments are appreciated.  The composition is pretty much as I took it. (some luck also involved) and, OK, a tad of cropping.  Thanks to proper exposure, some good processing (most labs were very familiar with B&W processing back then), and a bit of Photoshop hanky panky, I was able to retain details in the snow.  Low, winter afternoon sunlight also helped.  Don't be a stranger!  Best, LM.

Great shot - the expressions are priceless - I have done the Mount Royal "thing' myself.  And the toboggan is much too small for Dad so the kid is going to be solo soon.

I figure 'Dad' would eventually end up using a walker due to bad knees.  Probably sooner than later.  I like the look on the child's face; looks like she's done this before.  Best, LM.

Nice shot!  I remember back in the day when NY used to have lots of snow and people put chains on their tires.  Not anymore.

I think there may still be some folks who live in mountainous areas who still know the advantages of chains. In some places, I hear, they are mandatory.   Haven't used them in our area either (just north of NY state) since studded tires came out and they too have been outlawed here for about 35 years.  I think the preferred accessory on this hill was ski wax.  Stopping wasn't an option, rather a function of the leveling off of the hill near the bottom.  Best, LM.

Started out as an eight seater.  Each time down a little bit broke off.  This was the last run. :-)  Best, LM.
