steven_dempsey 0 Posted March 17, 2010 The first thing I notice when looking at this photograph is the lens flare which is pretty dominant in the composition. The second thing I notice is there are dirt spots visible in the sky. You probably need to clean the sensor of your camera. You could have easily removed them in Photoshop or whatever editing software you are using. Flares like this and dirt give a photograph an immediate amateur feeling. If I were shooting a scene like this, I'd find some kind of foreground element that gave a sense of scale or, at least, gave me a sense of where I am in this landscape. As it is, it's a little soft so you may have had the aperture open quite a bit which is not really suitable for wide landscape shots. I'd shoot something like this at around f11 or f16. As far as the overall composition is concerned, I don't find anything interesting here. It just looks like a generic landscape that could be anywhere in the world. Scenes like this are shot in the thousands every day so you have to try to find something that will hold the viewer's interest. Think about what is the main point of focus here? You've devoted a huge amount of the frame to grass and undefined winding trails. My eye goes to the distant mountains in the upper right side of the photo but they are not sharp and the details are not defined. Think in terms of foreground, middleground and background and try to compose your shot so that those three planes are distinct to the viewer. That way, you'll be able to more convincingly convey the vastness of the landscape and put all the elements into their proper perspective. I don't mean to be preachy, this is just my gut reaction to your photo. Steven Link to comment
