Noble, almost statue-like. You did a great job with the colors here, eliminating all but the main nature green and browns of the earth and Hans. I looked at your portfolio en masse again. What a delight it is, speaking to your skill and unique vision.

I agree with Jeff, love the low angle, it gives a sense of power and strength and the background is fantastic...........

Great addition David. I like the composition and the way you processed the picture. An A for both execution and originality. Regards-Jim.

Jeff - Thanks here, and for enduring my "mass" of pictures:). I respect your opinions and appreciate your visits very much.

Tim - Thanks - I sacrificed clean pants to get this low - Hans was already wet from the spring drizzle.

Janice - Glad you like the background light - it was important to me as well.

Alon - Thanks once again for your visit and appreciative comments.

Jim - Good to hear from you again - and thanks very much.

Best, David

Hans is absolutely beautiful here. The details in his coat are what makes this shot for me. The background is perfect for bringing out those details. Sharp, clean, good lighting and a well posed subject make or a 7 for aesthetics and the originality of the contrast of fore ground details and background lighting make for a 7 also.

David... Love the low vantage point, especially for these regal dogs. The lighting gives this an ethereal sense... maybe this is Saint Hans? A unique look that is well presented... Mike

Thanks much Tony, Guido, and Michael!

Mike - Hans is a sweet dog, but is a long way from Sainthood - just ask me how I know!

I agree with all of the other kudos on this shot.....it's different and one of your best. It almost looks like it could be a painting. Can you tell us more about how you composed it?

Hi Crystal - and thanks!

I assume you mean how was it processed? Basically - the shot was exposed for the back lit dog, which allowed the background to overexpose. It was a rainy, misty day - which gave a nice effect to the lighter areas. Further diffusion was applied to the background in PS, and overall colors were selectively desaturated, chiefly blues and magentas. A slight vignette was applied as well.

Take care, David

Thanks......actually I was wondering what camera settings you used, etc. It seems the background was quite bright, and I was wondering why the dog isn't silhouetted. Did you use a flash, or did you blend 2 images together? Or from what you said, maybe you just exposed for the dog, which over-exposed the background a little. It's a neat effect, and I'm just trying to learn from what you did in this situation where it seems the light was challenging. Thanks, David. If you don't have time to dig up that info, don't worry about it.

Crystal - No flash, no blending - 24mm lens, exposure was 1/30" @ f5.6, metering on the dog's chest. I wish I had gotten more depth of field on the dog, his head is slightly soft. Should have cranked up the ISO to achieve f8-f11 or so. 1/30" is the slowest speed I'd try hand holding - better if it were 1/60" - since dogs are never completely still. Always a challenge outdoors with these guys, especially in low light conditions like this.

Best, David

Thanks so much. I'll tell you that you're doing a lot better than me if you can take hand held at 1/30. My husband can, but I can't. 1/60 is even a bit of a challenge for me. You know, I didn't even notice the softness in his face until you just mentioned it. I just thought it was the brighter light on his forehead and nose causing that effect. Nevertheless, a really great shot. I appreciate your help!

Excellent perspective. The dog is almost majestic in this pose. I like the corseness of his coat and it seems to soften around the face, nicely done.
