one more try...try to match the distance between the upper right corner of the image to the edge of the ice (moving left) and the distance between the edge of the ice at the bottom of the image and the new left edge of the image after you crop it. somehow in my mind these diagonal points have to match. if it doesn't work, don't post just tell me, na, didn't work...

I'm not sure I understood what you mean. That I should try to crop more from the left to match the distances you mentioned? I tried that out, but the I either loose the square format, or too much ice at the bottom of the image. Or did I misunderstand you?

stanislav, yes i meant more of the left, discarding the square format but i have grown to like these images as they are and i know i am beating on a dead horse but this is one of those image that benefit immensely from a good monitor.
