Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple in Kuching, Borneo, East Malaysia

The Hiang Thian Siang Ti (Deity of the North) Temple was a very simple

building when it was first built by immigrants from China in 1863 at

Soon Hoon Street . (now known as the Main Bazaar)

In 1968 a major renovation was done and the Deities were completed

refurbished with gold foils and a pompous celebration takes place on

the 4th day of the 12th month of the Lunar calendar to commemorate the

occasion. This annual event attracts devotees all over and Kuching

city will have a burst of activities and merry making culminating with

a grand colourful procession. Thousands of people will line the

streets to witness the celebration and they are rewarded with a

skilful display of lion and dragon dance troupes amidst thunderous

beatings of gongs and drums. Lovely maidens, singers and dancers in

colourful costumes will follow on ornately decorated floats.

This majestic temple is managed by the Kuching Teochew Association. It

is a renown sacred place of worship for Chinese devotees and a

historical monument popular as a tourist attraction for both local and

foreigners.
