It's a little soft due to relatively long handheld exposure -- is this

a problem? Also, I'm a little worried that the way most of her neck

is hidden causes her head to appear to be floating in space, but maybe

I'm overanalyzing.

David, very nice pose, lighting and formatting. The neck does not bother me as you immediately go to her eyes and the blue cap.

David:

I don't believe the softness is a problem. The somewhat muted tones of the colors, shallow DOF and softness all work together well (IMHO)

I don't get the impression her head is floating. I think the hood running down to the crop line ties it all together.

cheers

I like the way you photographed this tiny delicate face. The semiprofile is a good angle for such a shot.

The photo is not too soft; it's just fine. You probably think that, because you are used to the sharpness of D60.

I wonder what's that rainbow like shape in the background. It doesn't really fit in this frame.

Tobin is a beautiful little soul and you did justice with this image. I wonder what would happen if you took out a little blue by adding more yellow, while at the same time adding a touch of red within Color Balance. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the comments. Re the rainbow like shape: I don't know, this was at a playground so I imagine it was one of the playground structures. I sort of like the way it continues the line of the hood but on the other hand it leads the eye away from her, so I've thought about cutting it down by cropping more square, but I think she needs some space in the direction she's looking. Re warming up the color balance, that would do good things for her hair color but I think not so good for the skin, hood, and background, I just took a look and I like as-is better.

Very good. Her hair enchors her head - avoiding the "floating" effect. I like the way the curve to the right seems to flow along the same line as her beret, too. The softness works, but if this were mine, I would probably slect just the eyes for a bit of additonal sharpness.

Very good portrait; her expression is quite nice and the colors are just right. Also the framing.
