Taken yesterday - composition "wise" may not have been the case but I did not like what I saw for 2/3rds sky or snow/ice. The snow/ice in front me was fairly well textured and i saw that the sky had similar properties and that is when I decided (right or wrong) to go with a 50/50 split. Then I wanted to emphasize the granularity and texture of the foreground and bring out the most from the clouds. This is a single image.

PS that is a car track in the foreground and sometimes the ice cannot support a car and the inevitable happens.

I really like the sky in this image, until I read your comment I thought the textured surface in the foreground was small stone perhaps a vantage point closer to the ground would have better shown the ice surface and provide a composition alternative. I see you are experimenting with watermark signatures.

This is very well done. I like the composition.

I see the same thing every winter, year year after year. Fanatic ice fishermen and snowmobilers can't stay off the ice. They ignore warm temperatures and go out there even when it is half melted, right into the spring. Only after a few vehicles and snowmobiles go through and there are some horrible icy deaths do they stop. I took some shots similar to this one on the weekend. This looks very dramatic to me because it looks like the tire tracks lead to a hole in the ice.

Best wishes,

Linda

Yes, the composition is unorthodox - but I like your experiment with texture. The colors are very soothing, and the sky and foreground are priceless. The small black figures add to its value. Regards.

Thanks for the alternative suggestion. The next time I am out there I will take you up on the proposed compositional idea. Today the temperature was up and we had lots of rain - I hope that ice is still nice and firm when I revisit. When the river is not frozen, the walking area would be up by the trees. Best regards,

Thanks for the visit and the comments. This is actually the first time in my life that I have ventured out on a frozen river (what we do to get images!) - I was still relatively close to the shoreline in an area that I know is relatively shallow. My confidence was boosted by seeing the folks 'way out there' where I know it is deep. There was a car and at least one skidoo 'out there'. Glad you liked the image - all of the very best,

Thank you very much for your visit and kind words - I broke away from the rule of thirds but this is the place to do it and get feedback from my friends at PN. Hope all is well and thanks again.

With such a terrific foreground and sky you could only go one way..it's good to break away from the orthodox view of how a scene should be composed....good on you mate!

Fantastic composition, the 50/50 at the first look appears to be a mistake but on this image has become the power given a dramatic feeling. Very good. It has encouraged me to make some 50/50 too. Best regards.

I appreciate your visit and just to let you know that trying a 50:50 is fairly new to me. My criteria was to have a good relation of elements (white snow and white fluffy clouds; blue sky streaks and gray ice streaks, etc) between the top and the bottom - maybe it works and maybe it does not. This is all art and what may be pleasing to some may not be pleasing to others. Best regards,

Beautiful photograph! Really emanates the cold winter day. I like the comp a lot too. The figures out on the ice add a lot here. Well seen; and stay warm! Cheers! Chris

Thanks for the visit and glad you like the composition. In retrospect perhaps I should have done a vertical pan of two images and get more cloud but I did not think of it at that time. I was thinking of returning to this location but a couple of days of above freezing weather has probably changed the safety of the ice. best regards,

Before I read any of the comments, the first thing I was struck by was the clarity and detail of the snow.....you even see the tread marks. I agree with your 50/50 decision, and I think it's great photography as well as story telling! These people are real risk-takers, aren't they?

Christal: Glad you liked my little experiment - not sure how many 50:50 landscapes I will do but most people seem to like this particular one. Good music and best regards,
