whydangle 0 Posted January 25, 2010 This is the first major winter storm for the nearby mountains of Bakersfield. This was taken just below the snow/rain transition. What's interesting to me about this area is that while the snow storms will be occurring for the next couple of months, the lower elevations are turning vivid green already. It makes a wonderful contrast, spring green and white snow. The clouds prohibited a sunrise photo, but immediately after the sun came up, the clouds began to break up. This scene appears violent, but was actually very calm and quiet. Truly one of my best mornings with a camera! Link to comment

accystan 0 Posted January 25, 2010 I think this is a stunning piccy. I normally don't like titles (if the pic relies on the title to convey to me that I'm looking at something which should be obvious and visually noteworthy then the photographer didn't do his/her job) but this title works well. It's all explained in four words; spring and winter juxtaposed. The cold, blue colours in the upper contrast nicely with the warm greens in the f/g. They also provide a great sense of depth; I particularly like the highlighted edge to the ridge in the f/g. That also adds to the depth. Well done, Dave D Link to comment
whydangle 0 Posted January 26, 2010 Thanks Dave. The title was one of many that came to mind. In the end, I try to make them simple enough, but titles like "winter" or "sunrise" have been used already; I'm trying to make them unique. The greens do contrast well with the winter setting, hence the title I finally decided upon! Link to comment

stp 6 Posted January 27, 2010 It is a very dramatic scene, made especially so by the clouds and relatively deep colors. The inclusion of a foreground element (rocks and small tree) really helped the composition. Personally, I like titles because they often help me understand the intention of the photographer. If the title doesn't reflect what I see or get from the photo, I'll go so far as to suggest another title. It's just a short way of expressing what we see or why we made a particular photograph (IMO, of course). Link to comment
Not Here 93 Posted January 27, 2010 Mark... A gorgeous study in contrast. The layering of the mountains adds excellent depth... Mike Link to comment

whydangle 0 Posted February 2, 2010 Thanks Stephen, Mike and Tony. Sorry, I lost track of responding somehow. Yes Stephen, I think the tree and rocks in the lower left rounded out the comp. I have since converted this to B&W and it looks pretty good as well. I will probably post that when this one is no longer simmering! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 13, 2010 I LOVE this! I too love the contrast between the green and white, and I also love wonderful clouds and clouds that hang low, so this image has everything! Link to comment
