Greek Orthodox religious icons are painted and sold at many monasteries and convents, and local priests may also try their hand. Most are simple items, but others are superb pieces of art in demand around the world. Among the latter are those produced by Father Kallinikos in his workshop at Stavrovouni Monastery. He is widely held to be one of the most superb icon painters of the Orthodox Church. He is 90 years old and he is preparing an exhibition of his new work. In this documentary portrait, he is seen in his workshop showing me his works book that also contains photographs of murals he painted in different churches. When he was younger, he said, he was also a photographer.
