Meir, interesting juxtapositions-- the very religious girl in front of the locked yeshiva with a sign of "Danger." This perspective makes her look small, lessening the tension of yeshiva and her burka, and all it represents. My eye is pulled to what hangs from her backpack: is it a high heel? If so, what a statement...!

the "nijab", I am told "hijab" not "nijab'; but Maha does not know much English so you are probably correct, or it is a different dialect. Anyway, my understanding is that a nijab/hijab does not cover the face. As for "backpack", I think we agree. This garment covers the entire face except a slit for the eyes and therefore I said "burka". I am probably wrong and you correct. By either name, a garment that covers the full face is unusual in Jerusalem. Thank you for commenting.

I have now done some research on Wikipedia. "A burqa (Arabic pronunciation: [ˈbʊrqa]; also transliterated burkha, burka or burqua from Arabic: برقع‎ burqu‘ ) is an enveloping outer garment worn by women....The burqa is usually understood to be the woman's loose body-covering (Arabic: jilbāb), plus the head-covering (Arabic: ḥijāb, taking the most usual meaning), plus the face-veil (Arabic: niqāb)." The bottom line is you are correct and I am still; often wrong but never in doubt. The title "burqa and backpack" has a little music in it so I'll leave it.
