street multiple dynamics: in, out, maybe

For some reason street photography is not as popular as it used to be. I am not sure why. Maybe we have all become accustomed to our hyper-real photoshopped universe (not that there is anything wrong with that :-) ). Anyway, I do think there is something nice about capturing a moment. When I saw the kids on the subway messing around along with the interesting dynamic between the friends, I shot this from the hip (yeah 14mm lens). I hope you enjoy it. Dan

If you could have found a way to convince everyone in the bus to do the same, it would have been even better.

 

 

Thank you for your kind comment Sarageaua. You are right that would have been cool. For me the real focus is the interaction between the couple in the upper left. I like the way it takes a moment for the eye to find that interaction, but that might just be me.

When I first looked at this the appeal, in terms of broad strokes, was immediate. Those feet in the center leading me to the rows of lights converging to the back door of the subway car, the slight skew to the angle, the overall crispness and terrific tones all pull in the eye and satisfy.

 

Secondarily, and in part motivated by your curious title, I begin to explore the interrelations of the main characters. The easy relaxed manner of the boy with his feet outstretched on the left, the boy watching from the sidelines on the right , eager to be part of the action even if from afar. The remainder of the passengers unaware and uninvolved each in their own minds and worlds. I then start taking in the couple on the left and the 'maybe' in your title begins to find explanation for me.

 

After my initial view I read the comments and I find myself in agreement with your assessment of how the couple sneak up on you. Once I allow myself to be pulled into that exchange everything else falls away. It is like I've been there on that car with that girl at some point in my youth, with that dreamy yet halfway attentive look on my face. That for me is part of the overall charm here the universality of the interactions and how they transport me back in time.

 

The interesting thing for me is that your freezing the moment and presenting it photographically is what makes me want to delve into these lives. Had I been on that train I may not have bothered to look over the top of my book for the second it would have taken to notice this charming scene.

This essay is one of the best “street” images, I’ve seen in the square format; the tilted horizon and the interaction between your main subjects make it very dynamic and tremendously attractive.....and that odd couple with the boy looking oddly at the girl just like the cherry at top of the pie. Congratulations on a superb photo!
