Nice shot Richard! Got the long lens out? Not sure why the crop was questioned, there's water all around and you left room to "fly" into. Works for me!

The day that I took this shot, I was standing on the end of my dock in the early evening with my brother-in-law. I saw what the low sun was doing with the light and I saw this heron land on the opposite shore. So, we jumped into my boat and gradually "snuck up" on the bird. I was able to take a whole group of shots and when the heron flew, it flew into the light, just right to highlight it's features and allow a fast shutter speed shot, with this lens at f8, it's sweet spot. I was really lucky!

 

This is one of the true joys of photography! But you guys already know this.
