danbliss 0 Posted October 19, 2010 It is a beautiful, slightly sad image with wonderfully graphic lines and shadows. Nicely done. Dan Link to comment
BK1664882259 0 Posted February 24, 2011 interesting image. spectre of the stray black dog. the railroad tracks & long diagonal shadows. clothes drying on a wire fence in an empty lot. photographer with a bird's eye view. like a scene from a movie with no beginning & no end. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 14, 2011 The essence of noir but understated. Has a lot of the elements but with a softness of gesture and light. More along the lines of the visual aspects of Chinatown as opposed to, say, In A Lonely Place. It's funny that the lines of the shadows come right toward us and yet they have a distinct sense of being diagonal, because of their relationship to the tracks, another reflecting graphic element. The dog is nicely located in the scene, spotlighted in the shadow! There's a homeyness to this, evidenced by the laundry but also but the delicacy with which you've handled a kind of hard scene. The light feels warm as does the perspective. A distanced perspective from above often feels cold, but does not do so here. Definitely a photo that tells a story and makes my eyes want to wander. Uhooru 2,207 Posted December 14, 2011 Fred, thanks for your remarks, I have another of these where I zoomed a bit, and I have to confess, this is one of those photos that was inspired by someone else's photo as I took this, though its not a direct analogue. The dog itself was taking a "pose" very similar to Daido Moriyama's famous "Stray Dog" and when I saw this I couldn't help but think of that photo as I took it. But in any event just a little "back story". Thanks, much appreciated.http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2683/4149049797_12858a1807_z.jpg?zz=1 Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 15, 2011 Hey Barry, thanks for posting the other pic. Love the "pose" of the dog in the second one, classic and really dynamic, even a little weird which is great. His more open stance reads really well and gives him quite a bit of presence, as does the glow of the light in that one. Overall, though, I like the wider view better because it gives more a sense of a world within a world. The train tracks and the bright lighting in the background of the original posting, balanced/anchored by the building on the left, gives a lot of atmosphere, too, aside from adding substantially to the narrative, and giving location to the dog/fence/laundry sanctum. Jack McRitchie 150 Posted September 28, 2016 Again the usual suspects comment on this picture. I'm afraid most people just won't get it - unless you become famous and then they'll go on for hours about your brilliance. It's a picture that I'd be proud to have taken, a one of a kind shot - which in the end is the only kind worth taking. Fred does a good critique, doesn't he? I always feel a little overwhelmed when he comments on one of my pictures because I know I'm going to have to reply in turn and that it's going to take me the better part of an hour to try to approach his eloquence. By the way, I completely agree with his remarks concerning the two version you posted. Link to comment
